About Us

Veloxint Corporation, a dynamic Boston-area materials start-up, commercializes high-performance metal components made through our new MIT-developed powder metallurgy (PM) approach. Role Summary

Veloxint is seeking an accomplished Materials Characterization Leader as we enter an exciting growth phase.  The Materials Characterization Leader will report to the VP of Product Development, and will build out and lead a brand-new laboratory space that will be used to evaluate the microstructure, and thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of Veloxint’s revolutionary nanostructured alloys.  The Materials Characterization Leader will be a hands-on leader, solving challenging and unique materials and manufacturing problems, and working with some of the premier aerospace, automotive, industrial, and consumer products companies in the world. 

Essential Responsibilities

While the responsibilities of the role will evolve over time, initially the Materials Characterization Leader will be:

  • Providing hands-on leadership, mentoring, and technical oversight to the materials characterization team, using deep expertise to teach others in the interpretation of characterization results, and effectively communicating those results to internal and external customers
  • Recruiting, selecting, and training new members of the team, as it continues to expand
  • Training and mentoring users of shared analytical equipment
  • Assisting in the acquisition, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of analytical and testing equipment in our facilities
  • Identifying external sources for characterization services (microstructural, mechanical, thermal, etc.) for specialized analyses or tests, communicating requests to suppliers, managing the testing schedule, and evaluating the results from those tests
  • Working daily with our R&D, Product Development, and Manufacturing teams in evaluating the precursors and components made from Veloxint’s nanostructured alloys, ensuring that they deliver value for our customers

Qualifications/Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • An advanced degree in Materials Science, or related field, and 5 or more years of demonstrated expertise in two or more of the following materials characterization specialties:
    • Microstructural: electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, particle size analysis;
    • Thermal: DSC, DTA, TMA, TGA;
    • Compositional: x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, CHNO, energy dispersive spectroscopy;
    • Mechanical: microhardness, tensile, bending, fatigue (HCF and LCF), crack growth, etc.
  • Experience leading small teams of researchers or engineers
  • The ability to connect a material’s structure or properties, to component performance
  • Experience in analyzing the structure and/or properties of powder metallurgy components
  • Demonstrated ability to function and thrive in early-stage and start-up environments
  • Strong listening, observation and communication skills
  • Strong process and data analytical skills as well as technical report writing skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and computer skills
  • An entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to effectively operate and problem solve based on limited information/experience when necessary

Desired Characteristics

An ideal candidate would also have:

  • Three or more years of experience within a R&D or manufacturing organization that characterizes metal powders and/or powder metallurgy products
